Travel Snacks
When you hit the open road with the family this summer, whether cross-country or just across town, there is one thing you can count on—hunger will strike. But there’s no reason to give in to the temptation of junk food for the sake of convenience. Plan ahead with healthy on-the-go snacks that will help you drive past the drive-thru.
- Taking the time to plan and pack healthy, balanced snacks sets a great example for your kids. Let kids help in the planning, and explain the importance of putting good eating habits first–even on vacation–so you won’t have to settle for questionable vending machine fare along the way.
- Pack items that don’t need refrigeration or utensils. You’ll have plenty to think about on your trip without having to worry about clean forks or ice for the cooler. Just remember to eat veggies or more perishable items first if the weather is warm.
- If time allows, pull off to a rest stop to eat so that everyone can stretch their legs, wash their hands, and enjoy eating together. Think of it as an extra destination on your journey! (Plus, your car will stay free of crumbs and spills.)
